I'm planning a trip to Ft Jefferson next year end of july early august. I will be in KW for 2weeks and Planing to go there for a overnight trip. My ? Is do small boats need to anchor in the designated Anchorage spot or can we anchor near the beach where campsites are. I see some pictures on line of people doing this but see nothing on line that says you can.

Love Fort Jefferson. I go there once a year, and camp on the island. You have to anchor in the designated anchor spots. The park rangers will ask you to move if you are too close to the beach or the docks. This is mainly to keep a clearing for Yankee Freedom, the Coast Guard, and other authorities that use the docks. The channel that accesses the fort is adjacent to the beach.
Also, the designated anchor area in the cove is all sand. So bring two anchors. Its always windy there. One year the wind was very strong and none of the boats were holding anchor. There was a lot of discussions with the rangers that evening what to do? They made us, along with five other boats, anchor about a mile away where there was a coral bottom. I slept on the boat that night.
If you are spending a night in the campsite, bring ear plugs. The frigate birds over the sanctuary are very loud.
Have fun. The best fishing in the keys is around the fort. You will easily limit out on a variety of species while bottom fishing.

This has been on my list of places to boat to. I live in Key West and have been to the fort a few times but never on a personal boat. I think I’d just sleep on the boat while anchored.

The fort and the hole island is a cool place definitely do it! The ride to and from can be pretty rough though, chose your day wisely. Rag’s
