Just spent last two days on the boat and didn’t break anything! First day fishing second one at the beach at Cape Lookout. Fishing - 11yo really wants his first Mahi, but mom and younger brother weren’t going all the way to the stream. So we tried the 20-25 mile range. Saw some flying fish but n real good water. For those familiar, started at Little 10 and finished at 14 bouy. When I pulled up the baits though, one bally was missing a tail, another was a clear bite off just behind the hook, and the planer bait was completely gone. So we may have missed some opportunities. Spent the the rest of the day bottom fishing, grunts, ring tails, BSB. I hooked what felt to be a grouper and got rocked up. The excitement though was the 11yo landing his first AJ. Wife thought he was on bottom so a trapped rod for a sec to see, but he was right, fish on! He was a bit disappointed when I told him about the worms, mom made a nasty face, and we let it go. It’s supposed to be good eating though if you can find meat without the worms. So so my question is, who eats them??

I know people that eat AJ's and they are aware of the worms. Check the fish where the body transitions to the tail, this is the area that the worms will be. Cut this part off and you can use what is left.

AJ is good. Our season opens today for them and I have a trip planned for this weekend. I have only seen a couple with worms over the last 10 years or so.

Just ate this guy night before last. YUM
Worms are in the tail meat and easily seen and cut out. The shoulder meat is awesome marinated and grilled. Funny thing is people turn their nose up when they hear worms, but the same people will eat halibut, but it's never advertised that meat too has worms.

Grilled AJ is my favorite grilled fish Smoked AJ is my second favorite smoked fish
I haven’t seen the issues with worms much here out of TB But down in the keys.....holy moly...I think sometimes there are more worms than meat

I have found that the fish we catch by the oil rigs don’t have the worms like the ones we catch on natural bottom. May be just a coincidence.

X2 on grilling and not over cooking. The meat up towards the shoulders is the best. Steak it out and enjoy.
