Max HP listed for this boat is 400hp. Is it what it is though, a lot of these boats are powered with 150’s.
As for running cables, I just read about people having good luck with Neodymium magnets. Not too worried about this now, as I probably won’t attempt this until spring anyway.

Nice. So you ended up purchasing it?

Signed the paperwork yesterday, closing Thursday or Friday. Marinemax has done a wonderful job getting the boat in tip-top shape for us. Not going to put it in the water though, they arranged to winterize and store for us no charge.

Congratulations. I've had a great experience so far with Marine Max on the island in Ship Bottom and Brant Beach. Patrick in sales, Ken in service and Rich was the captain who took me out for the sea trial. My neighbor is looking at the 276DC. He went to check them out at the AC boat show. I haven't talked to him to see if he went ahead with purchasing one. I am in Beach Haven West on the mainland.

Any thoughts on the extended warranty they offer? Its through Brunswick Marine, parent company to Mercury. It covers motors and a majority of the vessel itself. Its a chunk of change for three years.

Any thoughts on the extended warranty they offer? Its through Brunswick Marine, parent company to Mercury. It covers motors and a majority of the vessel itself. Its a chunk of change for three years. Please don't take this the wrong way, but I trust my capabilities more than I trust most boat or car dealer's service departments so I wouldn't normally consider paying for an extended warranty. However, if I wasn't mechanically and electrically inclined and didn't plan to put over 100 hours on the boat in the first year and planned to sell the boat before the warranty runs out (and it would have to be transferable) it might be worth it. Otherwise, it's a crap shoot.
Boats and motors are generally good and last hundreds if not thousands of hours without major maintenance as long as you do or have someone do the scheduled maintenance and handle waxing, etc. when needed. I doubt the warranty covers scheduled maintenance, so you'll have to do or pay someone to do those anyway and I'm sure the extended warranty requires the maintenance be done, or the warranty wouldn't be valid.
So, IMHO it's more what you're comfortable with than the likelihood of the boat or motor failing. Oh, and is that three year extension for three years AFTER the initial warranty expires, or really two years after the initial warranty. I've seen them written both ways so just a caution. If it's really just two years and you want it, negotiate the price.

I went for the extended warranty because it extended mine to 8 years. My goal is to be able to do a lot of that myself when it comes time for my next boat. But for now, I would be relying on others for mechanical and electrical issues. I don't know if it was the right choice but I hope I never have to find out.

The most they will do for this one is three years, and it’s non-transferable. They do a good job of scaring you into the unforeseen circumstances.

It's an insurance policy. Only you can make the determination if it's worth the peace of mind and if it's bumper to bumper including the motors the next 3 yrs will be your happiest boating periods. How much was the extended warranty dare I ask?

They want $10k, it’s bumper to bumper. Have to decide by tomorrow…

Please review this before deciding. And, there are a LOT of companies that offer an 'extended warranty' and you can buy them anytime. Since it's not really a warranty, but a service contract, please beware of the potential issues:
For that much money I'd probably want someone I trust to review the contract before buying it.
Good luck

Is it called Passport Premier, and did they give you a pamphlet with the different packages? The first offer they gave me covered a lot more items. It seemed nice to have the GPS, radio, trim tabs, etc covered, but after some thinking, I went with a more basic package. First, some of the coverage was for items that I didn't have. I didn't need coverage for AC, sunshade, trailer, trolling motor, down riggers, etc because they weren't options on my boat. Second, I figured that if something breaks, it's not going to be EVERYTHING. So, if the GPS breaks, I can use the money I saved to replace just the GPS. That was my thought process anyway. For me, the biggest thing that I wanted to cover was the outboard. The cost to do that was much less than $10k, but I have a single Merc (300) and not twins.

Correct, it’s the passport premier from Brunswick Marine, it’s not some shady third party. I’m really only concerned with the motors, I’m handy enough I can fix almost everything else on my own.
I’ve had many people tell me the 150 Merc’s are very reliable motors. In fact I’ve only heard of one major issue with this motor, and it was rare, it shot a piston out the side of the motor.

$10k is a lot of cheese for a 3 yr insurance policy. That amount would cover a lot of potential repairs over a 3 yr period.
Given the year, make, model and hours on your boat, if it were me, I'd pass and put that $10k in the war chest to put it towards any repairs and or upgrades/replacements.

If you're only interested in the motors they offer an 8 year gold or platinum package:
I only glanced at it, but unlike Yamaha's extended warranty you get directly from Yamaha, it appears Mercury only sells theirs via the dealer.
And I agree with fishnfool as I'd just put the money away for repairs or upgrades (seems I add something every year). However, when I bought my previous boat it came with the Yamaha extended warranty and that did provide some piece of mind. Of course I never had to use it and didn't get one when I bought the Sailfish.
