Damn, I thought before I got here it was going to be you. Years back I'd catch striper in the ocean in January. For years since I've tried, but without success. Won't be able to get out there this year, but at least I won't be out there hopeful and not catching this January.
Maybe my neighbor will take pity on me and take me out for specks. They usually end around November, but have been know to stick around the locks up to January if the water stays warm. I'll post one if I catch one.

Well I screwed up this past weekend. Was invited on a tuna trip but stayed at the marina installing an autopilot on the yellowfin I run. There were 2 big ones brought in, a 198.8 and and 189.

Had plans to fish on Sunday but wrecked my back driving 3-hours to airport followed by installing new rigging tubes and rewiring a bad horn. Saturday night I could barely walk. But maybe this weekend will be different. I hope to be fishing one of the three days.

So a neighbor invited me out on his boat today. We did a combination of inland fishing and some near shore reef fishing. My sabiki rig out-caught the two others on the boat and I filled the bait well with pins and google eyes. I wish I can say we turned them into bigger fish, but at the reef we were at there just weren't many takers. I fed a few baitfish to takers on the reef and also at the inlet, but overall we caught nothing of note. Do my sabiki rig baitfish catches count for first fish of 2023? Or maybe an undersized spotted trout or two? No matter, it was good to be out after a very long hiatus.

Scroll To the bottom and click on desktop. Then it will allow you to “add attachment”. Once it’s loaded you need to “insert’ the pic. Shows us the billfish! I’m thinking it’s an elusive Marlin.

It was indeed a sailfish, small, I'd guess 30-40 pounds
