It’s time. It’s seeped a bit for a while, especially in winter, but now it’s seeping enough that I’m carrying steering fluid in the boat. Pistol is pitted at motors straight position.
I’ve got twin 150’s on a 2006 2360cc. Has anyone swapped one out and how difficult was it?
Is it possible to fish without breaking something?!? Blew out the drag on an Avet 30 EXW today as well.

Option 1: Send it to Boatsteer Inc for rebuilding on the west coast of Florida. www.boatsteer.com/ They did an excellent job on my buddy's SeaVee helm and were fast. I believe 24 hour turnaround. Option 2: Buy the Seastar rebuilding kit and use some wet or dry sandpaper to smooth out the nicks on the ram. Should get you through a few more years Option 3: The absolute cheapest is to buy new seals for the old end caps from a hydraulic repair company for about $6 and do it yourself. Someone on THT posted the sizes and part numbers a few years ago and I bought some. They worked great if I can find the old invoice I'll post the info.

If you ram is pitted replacing the seal caps is nothing but a temporary fix, they will start leaking again. If you're just looking to get by for a few weeks this might work for you. Ive done my seal caps, it's a simple job so long ad everything comes apart easy.
Otherwise, call BoatSteer, do it right.

"pitted" is a relative term. I agree with the do it right theory. But, I've sanded down the steering ram on more than one boat and never had it leak again. It's not the very small pits that ruin the seals, it's the sharp edges of the pits. Only you can decide if the ram is worth saving. And, as Chris says, changing your seals is easy as long as you have the proper seal wrench. If you buy a rebuilding kit from Seastar, make sure you get one with the wrench.

I think the ram is toast. Ordered a new one, but I didn’t know about boat steer. Maybe I’ll hold onto the old one as a possible rebuild in the future. Rumor is these new ones don’t last as long due to ram not being solid stainless, but plated instead. Time will tell.

Damn. $325 plus $100 refundable core fee for one of their rebuilt ones. I dropped $500 on a new one. Grrrr.

That was my assessment too. Soaking everything in penetrating oil in hopes of reasonably easy disassembly. Have a wheel puller which I think I can rig to pull the support brackets. Still mulling that one. I’ll take pics if a figure it out...and it works. Arms won’t catch, but thinking some 550 cord for the arms with slip not around the bracket..550 supposed to be 550# breaking strength, x’s 3 attachment points...if that’s not enough.....

I’m sure mine have been on there since 2006, so even though it all looks good.... I have my doubts. I’m spraying a couple times a day now until the part comes in.

I have a 5345 on twin 200's.
I was defeated today trying to remove that steering rod end. Spend 2 hours messing with corrosionX, a wood block, and a hammer. I didn't want to get too crazy with the neanderthal method, so I opted to call it a day and order the $60 puller tool from Amazon.
Any luck with that $15.00 pitman arm puller?
