Spent a lot of money last summer chasing an oil leak on my port motor, required pulling the block, replaced the oil pump, some gaskets and put on a speedi sleeve.
In addition, last year I ended replacing both tilt/trim units due to leaks from the housing. One was replaced with new, the other was replaced with the unit I pulled and had rebuilt.
Also last year I did a 1k hr service check of valve clearances, replaced timing belts, and did a synch and link.
Well fast forward to 2021, boat has been in the water not even a month and I've been out 2 times for very short trips. Yesterday I noticed that one of my motors sounded funny, it was louder than usual, but otherwise ran fine.
When I got back to the dock I narrowed it down to the starboard motor. Pulled the cowling to see what I could see/hear. Noise wasnt under the cowling... I then noticed a small hole in my mid section apron...
Yep you guessed, it seems my mid section/exhaust guide suffered from the f'n dry exhaust corrosion and it punched a hole through the aluminum which then burned a hole through the plastic! FOOK ME!
I already ordered a new plastic apron - found one on ebay for cheap. I'm going to pull the current apron off to see how bad it is. I have a request for an estimate to replace the exhaust guide and if the parts are even available - I hear a lot of parts and stuff are backordered. This isn't going to be cheap and could potentially turn out to be even worse if theres corrosion at the matting surfaces where new gaskets are installed which would require buying an entirely new mid section.
If the hole is small and the surrounding metal seems sound, and depending on what my mechanic says, I may try JB Weld as a temporary fix to at least get me through getting down to NC to fish until parts are available etc.
The hits just keep coming...
